Are there any side effects of CBD oil?

Although still in its early stages of research, there have already been a number of reported benefits of the active compound, CBD.

Traditionally used to treat ailments such as acne, anxiety, insomnia and high blood pressure, CBD is believed to have an impact on the ‘endocannabinoid system’. This is a network of cell receptors that deal with the majority of our bodily functions, including mood, memory, pain and sleep.

As scientists continue to test and understand CBD to be a beneficial ingredient in medicines and cosmetics, there has also been research into the possible side effects associated with the ingredient.

It’s important to note that all medicines can cause side effects, particularly if they aren’t used as instructed, so when purchasing a CBD-infused product, we would recommend researching its creation and ingredients before buying.

As CBD is non-psychotropic, i.e. does not change a person’s mental state by affecting the way the brain and nervous system work, the side effects of CBD are minimal and typically very uncommon.

Such side effects include:

  • dry mouth
  • a slight drop in blood pressure
  • and drowsiness

It is very rare, but sometimes CBD can also interfere with other medication, so it is usually recommended to consult your doctor before using CBD alongside other pharmaceutical products.

Dry mouth

One of the most common side effects experienced by CBD users, dry mouth is said to be caused by the endocannabinoid, ‘anandamide’. The presence of anandamide causes the dry mouth sensation as it blocks the signals from the nervous system to produce saliva, resulting in a lack of moisture in the mouth.

The way in which you consume CBD can also have an impact on the likelihood of experiencing dry mouth. Researchers have concluded that you are less likely to have this particular side effect when ingesting your CBD, through products like capsules, and are more likely when choosing to vape CBD products.

A slight drop in blood pressure

Any slight drops in blood pressure are typically noticed when using a higher dose of CBD. This can lead to feelings of dizziness, and can occasionally cause light-headedness, but should not last very long.

For someone suffering with high blood pressure, the slight drop can be a useful side effect, to safely lower blood pressure for those at risk of heart disease and diabetes. For people with normal blood pressure, this can become a minor issue, but can quickly be resolved be drinking a caffeinated drink.

Drowsiness

When used in high quantities, some users can experience drowsiness, but this varies from person to person.

This is in fact quite a rare side effect, and many people instead experience feelings of increased energy and alertness when using CBD products.

For the few people that are affected by drowsiness when using CBD, the recommendation to reduce the dosage is often a successful way of alleviating the side effect.

When deciding whether to try out CBD products for an ailment or illness, it’s important to speak to your GP first if you have any reservations of how this may interfere with your current medication.

If you decide that you have researched the side effects and are happy to try out CBD-infused products, it’s important to also purchase your items from a reputable retailer.

Look out for retailers that test all its CBD products through a third party laboratory. Those that do this will very often share the reports on its website, so you can be assured that the products you are using are safe and of high quality.

You will also want to look out for brands that use all natural ingredients and processes when creating its products. Retailers who use a reputable supplier can ensure that the creation process is completed to the highest standard, enabling the ‘cleanest, most nutritional’ dosage, with no herbicides or pesticides.

Researching the brand you choose is vital, as you need to ensure that the products contain a legal level of THC (0.2% and below), and that what you’re using is the highest quality CBD.

What are the Benefits of CBD Oil?

Cannabidiol. The active ingredient most commonly known as ‘CBD’.

Although the use of CBD products has become much more common in recent years, the benefits of this versatile ‘nutritional supplement’ are still widely unknown.

The variety of illnesses CBD oil benefits, can, or could.

As you’ll learn more about in this blog post, CBD impacts the ‘endocannabinoid system’, a network of cell receptors that deal with most bodily functions. This includes memory, mood, pain and sleep to name a few.

As CBD naturally works to bind these receptors together, the introduction of CBD to the body could have a major positive impact on a variety of processes, and therefore improve a number of debilitating ailments.

Reducing stress and anxiety

1 in 4 people experience some form of mental health issue each year, according to MHFA England. With such a high percentage of people struggling with their mental health, including stress and anxiety, it’s not surprising that people are looking for ways to ease these crippling illnesses.

Traditional drugs used to improve feelings of stress and anxiety often cause numerous side effects such as drowsiness, insomnia and headaches, whilst others can sometimes lead to addiction and substance abuse.

For sufferers looking for a more natural remedy, CBD has more recently been a ‘go-to’ for those who struggle with anxiety and other related disorders.

Although more research needs to be done to prove the effectiveness of CBD on anxiety and stress, reports have shown that the presence of CBD helps by interacting with the ‘endocannabinoid system’ (ECS).

The ECS is the body’s own regulatory system, and these receptors are found almost everywhere in the body as part of the nervous system. It plays a vital role in maintaining the body’s range of conditions, and controls functions such as mood, memory, stress, sleep and pain.

These functions are regulated when receptors bind to chemical substances called endocannabinoids, which are naturally produced in the body. This system plays an important part in keeping us happy and healthy.

So, what are the CBD oil benefits in this process?

Well, CBD can also bind to these receptors and activate the endocannabinoid system, helping to regulate similar functions. There are also links to CBD and the binding of other receptors in the brain including serotonin.

Serotonin, otherwise known as the happy chemical, contributes to wellbeing and happiness, and a deficiency can lead to depression and other disorders. It has been reported that the positive effects of CBD on mood and anxiety is in some way linked to this function.

Although there is still little research on the topic of CBD and anxiety related illnesses, these early studies are showing promise in their ability to reduce stress and anxiety.

Preventing insomnia

There have been numerous studies showing the benefits of CBD for various sleep disorders.

As mentioned, stress and anxiety can have a huge impact on sleep deprivation, and as CBD has been reported to help benefit such mental illnesses, users have noticed significant improvements in sleep.

CBD is also known to improve alertness, which therefore reduces the tiredness you experience during the day, allowing you to feel more tired at night, helping to improve sleeping patterns.

These benefits of CBD on insomnia and sleep disorders are again linked to the endocannabinoid system. Endocannabinoid signalling has the ability to improve and regulate sleep, allowing users to experience a better night’s rest.

With other evidence supporting the use of CBD oil with the aligning of your ‘circadian rhythm’, the natural process that regulates the ‘sleep-wake’ cycle each day, there are many people who now use this natural remedy to benefit their sleeping pattern.

Pain relief

Marijuana has been used to treat a variety of ailments for hundreds of years, with pain relief being one of its key benefits.

Being a component of marijuana, CBD was therefore also thought to have potential pain relief powers. In a similar way that CBD is said to help anxiety and stress, it may also reduce chronic pain by “affecting endocannabinoid receptor activity, reducing inflammation and interacting with neurotransmitters” to offer effective pain relief.

Further studies on the topic have also shown that CBD can have a positive impact on conditions including multiple sclerosis, arthritis and sciatica, although further research into the benefits are still needed.

Improve acne

The NHS claims that over 95% of UK people aged between 11-30 years old are affected by acne to some degree – a huge percentage of people having to live with this skin condition.

Acne is said to be caused by a number of factors including excess sebum, inflammation, bacteria and genetics, but the most common cause is secretion from the skin’s sebaceous glands.

With its anti-inflammatory properties, recent research has suggested that CBD may be a possible treatment for acne, helping to reduce sebum production in excess and reduce spot inflammation.

With the effects of acne felt by millions of people across the world, the addition of CBD to facial products is now common practise, and can be found in a variety of products on the market.

There are plenty of other uses for CBD, and as experts on the ingredient, we can help you to understand if CBD could work for you.
